6 Magical Destinations In Guatemala That Will Change Your Life

Everyone has fantasized about traveling around the world at some point in their lives. I’ve been traveling alone for a few years now, and during this voyage, I’ve learned to be aware of my surroundings and to always trust my gut.

I don’t travel alone because it’s “trending on Twitter” or because I don’t have anyone else to come with me. I solo travel to challenge myself in new places and discover new cultures. Going solo forces me to meet strangers –and, because of this, I have amazing experiences along the way.

“Get lost in nature and you will find yourself.”

The most significant thing I’ve learned through my travels is that solo travel has the power to impact your life in unforeseen ways.

One important note: please don’t let guides (like this one) dictate where you should go, eat, and have fun. You don’t need a perfect plan to start. Just find the thing that makes you go get lost.

Stroll the cobblestone streets in Antigua

Antigua is a must-see vacation destination because of its cobblestone streets, neighboring volcanoes, and historic Spanish architecture.

Today, Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many convents, colorful landmarks, and numerous churches.

Overnight camping on Volcan Acatenango

Volcan Acatenango is Central America’s third highest volcano. Please do not underestimate this hiking trail. The hike to Acatenango normally begins at 8:30 a.m. from the trailhead and takes around 6-7 hours to reach basecamp at the top of the volcano.

For me, the real reward was waking up and watching the neighboring volcano, Volcan de Fuego, erupting so close to our basecamp.

Watch the magical Sunrise over Lake Atitlan

unrise over Lake Atitlán in Guatemala

The city of Antigua is wonderful, but one of my favorite sites in Guatemala is Lake Atitlán. It is situated in Guatemala’s western highlands. One significant fact is that Lake Atitlán was formed by a major volcanic explosion 11-12 million years ago.

Lake Atitlán (Lago Atitlán) is one of those exceptional places that takes your breath away, in my opinion. This location is wonderful because of the view. Three inactive volcanoes surround the lake: Toliman, San Pedro, and Atitlán.

Explore the emerald pools at Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey rivier in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala

Semuc Champey, hidden by dense vegetation, is one of Guatemala’s natural wonders. This national park provides a variety of trails, treks, and breathtaking views. Semuc Champey is an excellent location for a day of swimming or resting in nature.

Please keep in mind that Semuc Champey is only accessible via dirt roads. Traveling by private shuttle from Antigua to Semuc Champey will take approximately 8-9 hours.

Discover the Charming Town of Flores

Sunrise by the lake in Petén, Flores.

Flores is a small man-made island in Petén, Guatemala’s northernmost province. It is a pleasant area to relax and enjoy the views, with a laid-back ambiance, attractive plazas, and colorful colonial buildings. As a result, Flores is a great layover before embarking on your Mayan adventure in the forests of Tikal, Guatemala, which is only 45 minutes away.

Explore the Mayan Ruins of Tikal

Finally, and most importantly, Tikal was one of the Mayan civilization’s largest cities. Tikal is surrounded by lush rainforest and is part of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, which was established to safeguard the jungle that surrounds Petén.

There would be plenty of history, animals, and spectacular steep-sided Mayan temples on this magnificent jungle excursion. The Tikal ruins have become one of the most well-known archeological sites in Latin America.

Finally, don’t be cheap. Hire an excellent guide to show you around Guatemala. He’ll teach you everything there is to know about the history of this country.

A few Guatemala Travel Tips:

  • Taxis and tuk-tuks are generally safe modes of transportation. As a general rule, always haggle over the price of the ride before boarding.
  • Shuttle buses are the safest, but most expensive, mode of transportation. Always take the shuttle bus, in my experience.
  • Scorpions are common in Guatemala’s rainforest, so always shake your clothes and shoes before wearing them.
  • My favorite travel agency, Morenos Travel. Mauricio is bilingual, personable, and friendly, and he drives great cars: Tell them I referred you!
